God’s Plan for The Family
What Can a Nest 🪹 and Eggs 🪺 Teach Us from the Scriptures?
What can a mother bird’s nest and her eggs teach us from the Scriptures? Consider what God tells us in Deuteronomy 22:5-6:
“A woman shall not wear a man’s clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman’s clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God. If you happen to come upon a bird’s nest along the way, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs, and the mother sitting on the young or on the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young.”
From these verses, we are given two important lessons grounded in the created order of God. These appear uniquely together here in the Pentateuch.
1) God’s Design for Gender Distinction (Verse 5)
The first observation comes from verse 5. God commands that men must not wear feminine clothing or ornaments, and women must not wear masculine clothing or ornaments—what we would today call cross-dressing or transvestite behavior. The word used in this verse is strong: “abomination”, which means something God hates and detests.
This verse reveals God’s clear stance on the preservation of male and female distinctions. It reflects the creation order found in Genesis 1:27:
“God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
This divine distinction—one man and one woman—is to be upheld. Any distortion of this, including homosexuality and gender confusion, is described in Scripture as a rejection of God's design.
2) God’s Care for Long-Term Provision (Verse 6)
The second observation is from verse 6. This command, though seemingly simple, highlights God's concern for sustainability and long-term provision. The instruction not to take the mother bird along with her young or her eggs is a principle rooted in the preservation of life and the care of creation.
This lesson is clear: God designed order and purpose into His creation. Disregarding that order brings consequences. To understand the seriousness of violating God’s design, we turn to the New Testament—Romans 1:25-27:
“For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason, God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.”
Scripture interprets Scripture. When people abandon God's order, the result is disorder—and ultimately, judgment.
Application: A Warning for Our Time
God’s view of the created order versus the disorder brought by sin tells us clearly: God will not be mocked. As Galatians 6:7-8 says:
“Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption.”
We are witnessing the judgment and self-destruction of our nation before our very eyes. This generation is reaping what has been sown through the rejection of God’s truth.
So let the simple image of the mother bird and her nest of eggs remind us of these profound truths. Let it call us back to honoring the order God has established in creation.
Blessings.
